No Joe Thomas Deal For Broncos, Browns

NFL News
November 3, 2015

3:20pm: Troy Renck of the Denver Post and Mike Klis of 9News (Twitter links) both dismiss the idea that the Broncos didn’t finalize a deal because they ran out of time or didn’t have the cap space, suggesting it was the Browns’ asking price that made Denver balk.

Russini adds (via Twitter) that the Broncos were offering a fifth-round pick and the Browns wanted a third-round pick, though it’s not clear how those selections fit into her previous report (noted below). According to Klis (via Twitter), the Browns wanted a first-rounder and at least one other early-round pick, which was too rich for the Broncos.

3:07pm: Moments before today’s 3:00pm CT trade deadline, the Broncos were “racing” to restructure contracts in order to create the necessary cap room to accommodate a trade-deadline addition, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (via Twitter). However, it appears that deal fell through, or the team simply ran out of time.

According to Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN.com (Twitter links), the proposed trade would have sent Browns left tackle Joe Thomas and a fourth-round 2016 pick to Denver in exchange for the Broncos’ first- and second-round picks in 2016. Russini suggests that it’s not clear whether the two sides were in agreement on that proposal before the deadline — it sounds as if it was close, but couldn’t get finalized before the deadline.

Cleveland head coach Mike Pettine confirmed to reporters moments ago the Browns didn’t make any trades (Twitter link via Albert Breer of the NFL Network).

The Browns were reportedly considering deals for several of their veteran players in advance of today’s deadline, including Thomas, Alex Mack, Paul Kruger, and Barkevious Mingo. A report this afternoon indicated that the team wasn’t likely to complete a major trade, so perhaps the Broncos made an unexpected last-minute push to try to land Thomas.

This wasn’t the first time the two teams had discussed a potential Thomas trade, with at least one report this morning suggesting that Denver offered a first-round pick for the standout tackle earlier in the season. With both Ryan Clady and Ty Sambrailo out for the year, the Broncos could have used a stalwart lineman like Thomas to protect Peyton Manning‘s blind side the rest of the way, but the Browns’ asking price was steep.

Trade Rumors: Cowboys, Young, McCourty

NFL News
November 3, 2015

Will we see any trades finalized around the NFL today? Teams have less than an hour before this afternoon’s 3:00pm CT deadline arrives, so they’ll have to act fast to get anything done. Here are a few of the latest rumors and rumblings:

  • The Cowboys won’t be making any trades today, according to owner Jerry Jones (link via Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com). Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said the team had some calls, but nothing serious developed.
  • According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter), the defensive end market has been the most active today, with names like Vinny Curry (Eagles), Willie Young (Bears), and Jeremy Mincey (Cowboys) generating interest. It’s not clear yet whether their respective teams will move them, however.
  • Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (Twitter link) also mentions Young in his list of the players he’s heard mentioned the most today. La Canfora’s other names include 49ers tackle Joe Staley, Rams right end Jared Cook, Browns linebackers Paul Kruger and Barkevious Mingo, Raiders wideout Rod Streater, and Chiefs cornerback Marcus Cooper.
  • Per La Canfora (via Twitter), the Jets are among the teams that have been “sniffing around” pass rushers.
  • After reporting earlier that the Patriots had interest in Titans cornerback Jason McCourty, Rapoport says he’s now hearing that McCourty is no longer available (Twitter link).

No Major Trades Expected For Browns

NFL News
November 3, 2015

1:47pm: The Browns continue to discuss possible trades involving Mingo and Kruger, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (via Twitter).

1:35pm: Within the last few days, the Browns have emerged as one of the most fascinating teams to watch at the trade deadline, with names like Joe Thomas, Alex Mack, and Barkevious Mingo emerging as potential trade candidates. However, despite all the rumors and speculation, Cleveland isn’t expected to participate in any major deals at this afternoon’s deadline, says ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter).

As I noted earlier today, there was a chance of the Browns becoming the day’s biggest seller if their asking prices were met, but those prices sounded quite steep. Several reports indicated the team was seeking more than a single first-round pick for Thomas, while one report suggested Cleveland wanted a third-round pick for either Mack or Mingo.

General manager Ray Farmer still has nearly 90 minutes to make a trade, and it remains possible he’ll make a move or two. It doesn’t sound like a player as notable as Thomas will be involved in any deal, however.

Here are a couple more Browns-related notes, as the deadline nears:

  • If the Browns do make a move, outside linebacker Paul Kruger is another player worth keeping an eye on. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (via Twitter) that the team is willing to pay some of Kruger’s remaining salary to complete a deal.
  • While Josh McCown hasn’t been ruled out yet, the Browns are preparing for Thursday’s game as if Johnny Manziel will start, tweets Rand Getlin of the NFL Network. The short week doesn’t allow for a banged-up McCown to get much in the way of recovery time.

<div>Darren McFadden, Christine Michael Fantasy Outlook After Joseph Randle's Release</div>

Fantasy Football
November 3, 2015

The hierarchy in the Dallas Cowboys backfield became much clearer Tuesday, with the departure of running back Joseph Randle, per Cowboys insider Clarence Hill. Both Darren McFadden and Christine Michael will see their respective fantasy football values increase.

Through the first five weeks of the season, Randle and McFadden split time in the backfield; however, Randle received twice as many carries (74) than McFadden (37).

But a back injury to Randle and his undisclosed personal issues opened up an opportunity for McFadden to become the feature back. The former Arkansas Razorback rushed for 216 yards and a touchdown on 49 carries in Dallas’ last two defeats.

“Certainly we were giving him a lot of work out there and it seemed like he was handling it well and just gaining, if you will, strength,” said team owner Jerry Jones following Sunday’s game, per Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News. “He took a breather or two, but seemed like he’d come back out and was the most effective back for us out there.”

In a sense, cutting Randle illustrates how Jones and the team are confident McFadden can be the guy going forward this year.

While Randle’s release makes McFadden a fringe RB2/flex option, fantasy owners know better than to put too much faith in him. Few players have so frequently disappointed in terms of output as much as McFadden has in recent years. It felt like every season between 2008 and 2013 he was discussed as a fantasy sleeper.

Yet, only once in the last seven years has McFadden rushed for over 1,000 yards. He isn’t the kind of running back who gives you a high volume of receptions on a weekly basis, either, which could’ve otherwise compensated for underwhelming production on the ground.

Of course, the biggest knock on McFadden is his inability to stay healthy, a point to which Nerdy Football’s Matt Camp alluded after the news about Randle:

McFadden has never started a full season in the NFL, and he has averaged just over 11 appearances per season since getting drafted in 2008. The next ailment to sideline McFadden is seemingly a matter of when, not if.

As a result of McFadden’s injury issues, Michael wouldn’t be a bad addition in deeper leagues or if you have McFadden already. Stats’ Tom Kessenich figures the former Seattle Seahawk is bound to get a chance at some point:

With that said, there’s no guarantee Michael will deliver if given time in the backfield. Michael’s talent isn’t in question, but Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable described last year how he sorely lacked consistency during games, per Jayson Jenks of the Seattle Times:

You might see the great cut one time and then not the next, and it’s the exact same scenario. He comes across and makes a great blitz pickup one play and then he’s supposed to chip and then, ‘Oh, I’m going to get out for my route, and oops I forgot to chip.’ It’s just being able to put a good play together and then a good one the next time and the next time. When that becomes his habit, then he owns it. Right now he doesn’t own it.

Seeing Michael explode for one or two games in 2015 wouldn’t be all that surprising. Maybe the matchup is just right and McFadden is hobbled, or maybe everything clicks and Michael looks like the running back everybody expected him to be coming out of Texas A&M.

Until he shows can deliver week and and week out, though, a one- or two-week outburst is all you can expect from Michael at this point.

He has a somewhat-high ceiling, and when you combine that with McFadden’s injury history, he is a more attractive waiver-wire option with Randle out of the picture. Just don’t count on him to single-handedly win you a critical game in the second half of your fantasy season.

Chargers’ Keenan Allen Out For Season

NFL News
November 3, 2015

12:55pm: Allen will be placed on injured reserve and will officially be sidelined for the season, reports Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune (Twitter links). Allen, who has a lacerated kidney, underwent a procedure on Monday to stop the bleeding, but is expected to eventually make a full recovery.

TUESDAY, 12:15pm: Allen has undergone a non-surgical kidney procedure and may be sidelined for the rest of the season, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. The wideout’s exact recovery timetable is still unknown, but if the club decides to place him on IR, Tyrell Williams or Javontee Herndon could get a promotion from the practice squad, tweets Eric Williams of ESPN.com.

MONDAY, 5:38pm: Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen will be out for “some time” with a kidney issue, coach Mike McCoy told reporters (via Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego). Allen suffered a kidney injury Sunday when he landed hard after a receiving touchdown against the Ravens.

Allen, 23, recorded 67 passes for 725 receiving yards and four touchdowns through the team’s first eight games. While Allen was inconsistent in 2014, he was well on his way to meeting and exceeding his level of play in 2013. In that breakout rookie campaign, Allen recorded 71 catches for 1,046 yards with eight scores.

It’s not clear exactly how long the Chargers will be without Allen, but they do have the option of going out-of-house for help if they want to make a trade before the deadline. If the Bolts stand pat, they can promote either Javontee Herndon or Tyrell Williams from the practice squad to help replenish their depth. Antonio Gates is also likely to see an uptick in targets while Allen is sidelined.
