Injury McCarthy not concerned about Cooper

The Cowboys have decided to take it slow with multiple players as training camp opened Thursday. Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed in a press conference that wide receivers Amari Cooper (ankle) and T.J. Vasher (knee), defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (back), defensive tackle Trysten Hill (knee), kicker Greg Zuerlein (back), rookie defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (hamstring) and offensive lineman Mitch Hyatt (knee) will open camp on the team’s physically unable to perform list. (Dallas Morning News)

Nerdy Football Analysis: McCarthy went on to say that he wasn’t concerned about Cooper. “I’m not concerned. … When you see him, he’s in great shape.” Better than he was even last year, McCarthy said. Despite missing off-season workouts, Cooper along with Kicker Zuerlein are expected to be ready for Week 1.

Cam Akers out for the season with Achilles tear

Injury Suffered injury while training

#Rams RB Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles while training, per source.

Brutal blow for L.A., which loses its leading rusher from last season a week before camp begins. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Brutal. Akers was inline to be a workhorse back and was highly sought after by the fantasy community checking in with a 2nd round ADP. Darrell Henderson, Xavier Jones, Raymond Calais and Jake Funk are next up on the depth chart but don’t be surprised if the Rams make a play for a free agent running back. Le’Veon Bell, Duke Johnson and Adrian Peterson are still free agents. Henderson’s value should be on the rise with this news.

Steelers to put more emphasis on the run

Roethlisberger had 608 pass attempts in 2020

“Mr. (Art) Rooney has sent out a very clear directive to Mr. (Kevin) Colbert, to Coach (Mike) Tomlin, and then to me. We want to be able to run the ball when we have to run it,” new offensive coordinator Matt Canada said.” Less Ben Roethlisberger will be a better Roethlisberger, or so that’s the theory heading into the 2021 season. Now, that doesn’t mean that he can’t and won’t have his moments, but for the Steelers and Roethlisberger to have any chance of proving the droves of doubters wrong, the days of throw short and run long and 50 passes per game have to be a thing of the past. (The Athletic)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Roethlisberger racked up 608 attempts last year in 15 games as the Steelers featured a short-yardage passing attack. He admitted to being worn down at the end of the season and given his elbow issues, it stands to reason the Steelers want to take a little off his plate in 2021. Pittsburgh threw the ball at a 64.6 percent clip last season (2nd highest) so it’s a good bet that ratio will come down significantly if OC Matt Canada has his way.

Deshaun Watson’s 2021 season remains in limbo

Fantasy Football, NFL News

Investigations ongoing

A Houston PD spokesman told Pro Football Network Monday that their investigation into Deshaun Watson is ongoing. The NFL is conducting its own inquiry; ESPN reported recently that Watson is willing to cooperate with the league’s efforts. Even if Watson is never charged, the NFL could mete out its own punishment, including a suspension. Another option is the league placing him on paid leave while the criminal investigation plays out.

So, although Watson remains on the Texans’ active roster, that’s subject to (and likely will) change. (ProFootballNetwork)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Adam Beasley gives a nice recap/update of Watson’s situation which remains in limbo just a couple weeks from the beginning of training camp. Watson skipped off-season workouts and the team has Tyrod Taylor ready to start if Watson isn’t available. At this point, it seems like only a settlement between Watson and his accusers and and end to the police investigation are the events needed to allow Watson to have some kind of opportunity to play this season.

Breakout year coming for Mecole Hardman?

Fantasy Football, NFL News

Opportunity to be in the starting lineup Week 1

From the voluntary workouts and the team’s mandatory minicamp, Mecole Hardman, a third-year player, appears to be in position to have a breakout season, as he is expected to have the role previously held by Sammy Watkins. Hardman will enter camp as the second receiver on the depth chart. It’s possible that either Byron Pringle or Demarcus Robinson could push Hardman during camp, but I have more confidence in Hardman after he was a consistent performer in May and June. (The Athletic)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Beat writer Nate Taylor covers the Chiefs closely so his opinion is noteworthy. Hardman was a role player last season posting a 41-560-40 line in 16 games. The loss of Watkins gives him the opportunity to vault into a WR3 or Flex option for fantasy purposes and is worthy of a late-round gamble given his ties to the best quarterback in the game.
