Saquon Barkley to get eased in

Injury HC hints at his back’s early workload

The Giants plan to take a “long term” approach with Saquon Barkley (knee), coach Joe Judge told me in a 1-on-1 interview. Still a chance he’s ready for Week 1 though. (ESPN – Jordan Raanan)

Nerdy Football Analysis: This report shouldn’t be all that surprising since the Giants elected to put Barkley on PUP to begin camp a few days ago. With that said, this whole situation has the feel of Judge taking a page out of the book of mentors Bill Belichick and Nick Saban by keeping everything as mysterious as possible. Barkley will likely get eased in early, but fantasy managers should expect the training wheels to come off fairly quickly if he comes out of Week 1 and Week 2 without incident. Devontae Booker will get some extra run in the meantime.

Michael Thomas lands on PUP

Injury Ankle injury could keep WR out until Week 7

The Saints have officially put WR Michael Thomas (ankle) on PUP to begin training camp. (ESPN – Field Yates)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Thomas can come off the PUP list at any time but must miss the first six weeks if he remains there going into the season. Thomas’ expected absence frees up roughly 25 percent of the team’s target share to spread out among Alvin Kamara, Adam Trautman, Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris. New Orleans is almost certain to lean more heavily on the run game (specifically Latavius Murray) as well. Thomas is a smart stash candidate in leagues with multiple IR spots in the early double-digit rounds, but managers in non-IR leagues are justified in letting him slip further than that.

Rodgers hinting he plans to play in Green Bay this season

Many factors at play

#Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has indicated to people close to him that he does plan to play for GB this season, sources say. That is the expectation. Many factors at play, but with GM Brian Gutekunst saying he is “hopeful” for a positive outcome, there is a glimmer of optimism. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

Nerdy Football Analysis: The Packers veterans are set to report to camp on Tuesday so we’ll have good indication of what Rodgers intends to do tomorrow. If you haven’t been, it’s time to start drafting Rodgers and Davante Adams with the expectation that the All-Pro QB will play in Green Bay in 2021.

Deshaun Watson expected to report to training camp

Still seeking a trade

Quarterbacks are reporting Sunday for the Houston Texans, and Deshaun Watson is expected to be among them, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The star QB will be present for testing to begin entry into camp, though his stance about the organization and desire to be traded remains unchanged, Rapoport added. (NFL.com)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Watson is still under investigation by the league and the police for alleged sexual assault and misconduct. He has requested a trade but there’s been no movement on that front either. We sit in limbo until there is some clarity.

Michael Thomas expected to miss start of 2021 season

Injury Ankle surgery in June

Sources: #Saints star WR Michael Thomas is expected to miss the start of the 2021 season after undergoing surgery to repair the ligaments in his ankle in June. Based on the timing of the surgery – and recommended 4 months of recovery ?” Thomas could be on the sideline for weeks. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Wow. This is a serious blow to Thomas’ fantasy outlook. He was limited to 7 games in 2020 due to an injury to the same ankle. Apparently it didn’t heal correctly. We should get a better idea of his recovery timeline in the coming days, but missing the first month of the season is a real possibility. Expect the Saints to be shopping the free agent wide receiver market in the coming days.
