Nerdy Football Analysis: Absolutely devastating news for the Chiefs and all of Charles’ fantasy owners. Kansas City will likely move on with some form of committee of Charcandrick West and Knile Davis, although both seem to have plenty of support within the Chiefs’ front office. West’s slashing style resembles Charles’ while Davis is more of a pounder that has already shown he has the ability to carry the load. The team also plans on working out Pierre Thomas and Ben Tate.

Jamaal Charles Has Torn ACL

The Chiefs’ worst fears have been confirmed. An MRI revealed that star running back Jamaal Charles has torn his ACL, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (via Twitter).

Losing Charles is obviously a huge blow to a Chiefs club that, after Sunday’s close loss to Chicago, sits at 1-4. In an AFC West the features the undefeated Broncos, the .500 Chargers, and the upstart Raiders, a serious injury to Charles could be a death knell for Kansas City. The 28-year-old Charles was his usual self early on in the 2015 campaign, averaging more than five yards per carry and scoring five times.

If Charles is out for the year, the Chiefs will turn to a combination of second-year pro Charcandrick West and third-year man Knile Davis. Davis had been the primary backup to Charles since the former’s rookie year, but Kansas City’s backfield has seen something of a changing of the guard in recent weeks, with West seeing the majority of the snaps behind Charles. A timeshare would probably make the most sense if the Chiefs are forced to play with Charles.

Charles missed most of the 2011 season with an ACL injury, though it was his left knee that was damaged four years ago.

Ravens hopeful Steve Smith can play in Week 6

InjurySat out Week 5 with four microfractures in his back

There’s a shot that injured Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith will play Sunday at San Francisco and miss only one game with four micro fractures in his back.

Coach John Harbaugh doesn’t know whether Smith will practice this week, but he indicated that the Ravens’ leading receiver has been training hard.

“I’m hopeful,” Harbaugh said Monday. “Very hopeful. There’s always a chance with Steve Smith. Always. Never rule Steve Smith out.” (ESPN)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Smith is as tough as they come, so it is entirely possible he can go against the 49ers in Week 6. Harbaugh also told ESPN RB Justin Forsett doesn’t have a high ankle sprain, giving him “a chance” to suit up in the same game. Expect both to be game-time decisions, with Forsett the more likely of the two to play versus San Francisco.

Beckham, Randle sustain Week 5 hamstring injuries

InjuryJoin Cruz as ailing Giants WRs

The Giants saw their top two receivers – Odell Beckham Jr. and Rueben Randle – suffer hamstring injuries during Sunday night’s win over the 49ers. Beckham returned to the game, while Randle did not, and both told reporters in the locker room they did not think their respective injuries were serious.

Victor Cruz was expected to be re-evaluated Monday, 10 days after his PRP injection into his injured calf, and the one-year anniversary of his torn patellar tendon. But Coughlin said he did not have any update, nor did he know Cruz was supposed to meet with doctors. (NJ.com)

Nerdy Football Analysis: At the moment, the Giants are down to rookie Geremy Davis, Dwayne Harris and Myles White in terms of healthy receivers. Although Beckham returned to the game, he looked extremely tentative while New York was completing its game-winning drive. If Beckham and Randle are both held out of next Monday night’s game against the Eagles, it is entirely possible that Harris and TE Larry Donnell end up as Eli Manning’s top targets in that contest.

Patriots Work Out Hakeem Nicks

NFL News

The Patriots worked out wide receiver Hakeem Nicks on Monday, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The wide receiver has been making the workout rounds as he searches for a new team in 2015. The Patriots could have interest in adding the veteran, but their real interest could be intel. The Pats take on the Colts this Sunday in Indianapolis.

Nicks, who spent his first five years with the Giants, posting multiple 1,000-yard seasons in New York, caught just 38 balls for 405 yards and four touchdowns last year in Indianapolis. He found a new home in free agency when he signed with the Titans earlier in the year, but Tennessee opted to keep just four wideouts on the roster to start the season, cutting Nicks in September. The veteran wideout has since worked out for the Saints, Cowboys, and Giants.

Nicks first reached unrestricted free agency in March 2014 and signed a modest one-year contract with the Colts. While fellow 2009 first-round wideout Jeremy Maclin parlayed a one-year, prove-it deal in 2014 into a huge, long-term contract, Nicks was unable to do the same in Indianapolis
