2016 Offensive/Defensive Coordinator Tracker

NFL News
January 15, 2016

While at least six NFL teams are making head coaching changes this offseason, the number of clubs replacing offensive and/or defensive coordinators figures to be much higher than that. In addition to all those teams hiring new head coaches, who may want to bring in their own assistants, several clubs also figure to make changes on one side of the ball or the other after getting disappointing results in 2015. And, of course, the teams whose coordinators landed head coaching jobs will need to replace them.

With reports circulating on potential candidates, interview requests, and actual meetings, we’ll use the space below to keep tabs on all the latest updates on teams hiring new offensive and/or defensive coordinators. This post, which will be updated daily, can be found under the “Nerdy Football Features” menu on the right-hand side of the site.

Offensive coordinators

  • Chicago Bears
    • Out: Adam Gase
    • In: Dowell Loggains
  • Cincinnati Bengals
    • Out: Hue Jackson
    • In: Ken Zampese
  • Cleveland Browns
    • A report indicated that John DeFilippo is among the Browns assistants who have been asked to stay with the team if the new head coach wants to keep them. Cleveland management won’t force the incumbent OC on Hue Jackson, particularly since DeFilippo has drawn interest elsewhere, but he could stick around. Pep Hamilton has also met with Jackson.
  • Detroit Lions
    • With Jim Caldwell remaining in Detroit, Jim Bob Cooter looks like a good bet to stick around as well — he’ll likely get a promotion from interim OC to the permanent role.
  • Indianapolis Colts
    • In: Rob Chudzinski promoted to permanent OC (had been interim)
  • Kansas City Chiefs
    • Out: Doug Pederson
    • In: They’re still alive in the playoffs, so the Chiefs won’t be announcing a new offensive coordinator quite yet. When they do, current assistant Brad Childress would seem to be a strong option, though it’s possible he’ll follow Pederson to Philadelphia.
  • Los Angeles Rams
    • Jeff Fisher liked the job Rob Boras did as the Rams’ interim OC down the stretch, and it looks like Boras will probably get the full-time job. The club brought in John DeFilippo to interview for the OC role as well, and is said to be considering potential passing-game coordinators.
  • Miami Dolphins
    • With Bill Lazor having been fired late in the 2015 season, the Dolphins don’t currently have a permanent OC, and Adam Gase figures to bring in his own guy. Packers assistant Mike Solari has been mentioned as a possible candidate.
  • New York Giants
    • Out: Ben McAdoo
    • In: McAdoo is expected to promote quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan to the OC role, though the new head coach may retain play-calling responsibilities.
  • Philadelphia Eagles
    • Current OC Pat Shurmur, who finished the season as the Eagles’ interim head coach, is a candidate to remain on board. So is Chiefs assistant Brad Childress, who has worked closely with new head coach Doug Pederson.
  • San Diego Chargers
    • Out: Frank Reich
    • In: Ken Whisenhunt
  • San Francisco 49ers
    • While no official announcement has been made yet on incumbent OC Geep Chryst, Chip Kelly is expected to bring in his own OC, and Eagles quarterbacks coach Ryan Day has been mentioned as a candidate.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • Out: Dirk Koetter
    • In: There has been no indication yet who Koetter will hire or promote to fill his old role as OC. Since he’ll likely continue to call plays, he may not formally name an OC, but that would be surprising.
  • Tennessee Titans
    • Jason Michael remains the Titans’ offensive coordinator for now, but considering he was a Ken Whisenhunt hire, he seems unlikely to stay in that position for 2016. Tennessee will need to finalize a head coaching decision before making the call on the OC.

Defensive coordinators

  • Cleveland Browns
    • Current DC Jim O’Neil has been given the opportunity to explore opportunities elsewhere, and I don’t expect him to return to the Browns. Ray Horton and Leslie Frazier have both been identified as candidates for this job, though Kevin Coyle may end up being the pick.
  • Indianapolis Colts
    • Out: Greg Manusky
    • In: Ted Monachino
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
    • Out: Bob Babich
    • In: The Jaguars are taking their time naming Babich’s replacement. The team spoke to Falcons secondary coach Marquand Manuel, and that meeting is said to have gone well. Lou Anarumo, who finished 2015 as the Dolphins’ interim defensive coordinator, is also interviewing for the position.
  • Miami Dolphins
    • Out: Lou Anarumo
    • In: Vance Joseph
  • New Orleans Saints
    • Although the Saints haven’t made an official announcement yet, the team is expected to retain interim DC Dennis Allen for the 2016 season.
  • Philadelphia Eagles
    • No announcement has been made on Billy Davis‘s status, but Doug Pederson is expected to have a new DC. Jim Schwartz‘s name has surfaced repeatedly, while Mike Pettine has also been identified as a possible candidate.
  • San Francisco 49ers
    • There has been no word yet on whether Chip Kelly intends to replace Eric Mangini as the 49ers’ DC.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • Out: Leslie Frazier
    • In: Mike Smith
  • Tennessee Titans
    • Until they hire a head coach, it’s not clear who the Titans will have at DC in 2016. Ray Horton isn’t officially gone yet, and is even interviewing for the head coaching job. but he has been linked to the Browns, and if Tennessee brings in an outside head coach, an outside DC is anticipated as well.
