Former Washington, Chiefs, 49ers QB calls it a career

Quarterback Alex Smith announced his retirement on Monday in a video posted to Instagram. Smith, 36, won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award in 2020 after returning from a catastrophic leg injury to start six games for the Washington Football Team. Smith played 14 seasons over 16 years in the NFL for the 49ers, Chiefs and Washington after San Francisco drafted him No. 1 in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Utah. (The Athletic)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Smith’s remarkable return from his leg injury will be a significant part of his NFL legacy. His best fantasy season came with the Chiefs in 2017 when he posted a 4042-26-5 passing line with 355 rushing yards and 1 rushing TD, finishing as the QB4 in fantasy points per game.

Patriots release veteran wide receiver

While Julian Edelman showed up on the NFL transaction wire today as having his contract terminated by the Patriots, the expectation is that it is a technicality as part of a retirement, per @MikeReiss. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Edelman played only six games last season dealing with a knee injury that limited his production. The Patriots have accumulated Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne in free agency to give their wide receiver room some depth.

Injury Turf toe-type injury

Ex-#Steelers RB James Conner underwent surgery to repair a very moderate turf toe-type injury this offseason, sources say, a procedure done by renowned specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. The injury incurred while riding in a recreational vehicle. A full recovery is expected in June. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Toe injuries can be tricky for athletes but there’s nothing to suggest at this point that Conner won’t be ready for off-season workouts this Summer. After four seasons in Pittsburgh, Conner is scheduled to visit the Cardinals on Monday. The Cardinals currently have Chase Edmonds and Eno Benjamin at running back.

Bengals release Giovani Bernard

Injury Was asked to take a pay cut 2 weeks into free agency

Giovani Bernard asked for his release and the #Bengals granted it, source says. The team had asked him to take a pay cut two weeks into free agency, which hurt his chances of landing elsewhere. But he’s expected to find a new gig soon. (Mike Garafolo on Twitter)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Gio has played for the Bengals since being drafted in 2013. He’s largely played behind Joe Mixon the last three seasons which has limited his fantasy value. He’ll likely land a backup gig somewhere else but will struggle to have value on a weekly basis. The Bengals have Trayveon Williams and Samaje Perine behind Mixon heading into the draft.

Panthers make a move for Sam Darnold

Fantasy Football, NFL News

Jets receive 2021 6th-round pick and 2bd- and 4th-round picks in 2022

Filed to ESPN: Jets trading QB Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers for a 2021 sixth-round pick and second- and fourth-round picks in 2022, per sources. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

Nerdy Football Analysis: The Panthers have been looking to upgrade their quarterback position but it’s fair to question how much of an upgrade Darnold is over Teddy Bridgewater who has two years left on his contract. While Darnold is likely the Week 1 starter in Carolina, this trade doesn’t move the needle for the likes of Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore or Robby Anderson. The Jets own the No.2 pick in this year’s draft and will taking a quarterback.
