Week 5 Waiver Wire: Breakout Pickups, Targets and Tips for Fantasy Football

Fantasy Football
October 2, 2016

We’re almost through Week 4 of the NFL season and, more importantly, your 2016 fantasy football season.

Whether you’re sitting at 4-0 or 0-4 after four weeks of taking on your friends, family members and coworkers, it’s not too late to mix up your lineup and take control of your team.

(Well, you may be past the point of no return if you’re 0-4. But there’s no harm in trying!)

There were a handful of players who stood out in Week 4 and who would be worth targeting this week on waivers.

Players were considered potential waiver-wire options if they were owned in under 60 percent of Yahoo Sports fantasy football leagues as of Sunday.

Players to Watch

Terrance West, RB, Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens may have lost a heartbreaker to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, but it was not for lack of trying by running back Terrance West.

West emerged onto the scene in Week 4 after the Ravens benched Justin Forsett, and he rewarded his team for its vote of confidence. West finished his day with 21 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown, earning him 17.30 points in standard leagues.

Comcast SportsNet’s Bo Smolka noted how much progress West has made already this season, from training camp until now.

Don’t you want to find out how much better West could become this season? Moreover, don’t you want him on your roster if he blows up?

West is not a great play in points-per-reception leagues. But in standard leagues, he’s proving himself to be a flex or even an RB2, depending on which players are on bye weeks and if injuries have hit your team at the running back position.

Eddie Royal, WR, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears receiving corps has been a giant question mark for fantasy owners as of late, especially with Chicago establishing a new identity on offense without quarterback Jay Cutler

But on Sunday, starter Brian Hoyer established that wideout Eddie Royal was going to be his go-to weapon…and only 12 percent of fantasy owners who owned Royal as of Sunday got to benefit.

And benefit they did, as Hoyer connected with Royal for seven receptions, 111 yards and a touchdown.

That was good for 17.10 points in standard leagues. For comparison’s sake, his teammate, Alshon Jeffery, is owned in 100 percent of leagues and scored just 4.60 points, connecting with Hoyer for three receptions for 46 yards.

One game doesn’t mean that Royal is about to become Chicago’s top wideout in every game. But he’s worth a pickup for Week 5, especially as the Bears begin to gain steam on offense and take on the struggling Indianapolis Colts.

Hunter Henry, TE, San Diego Chargers

Everyone knew the San Diego Chargers were drafting their tight end of the future when they selected Hunter Henry in the 2016 NFL draft.

But the future seems to be here sooner than we thought.

Antonio Gates is a future Hall of Fame tight end, but the Chargers are starting to envision what life post-Gates looks like. The fact that Gates is injured doesn’t help.

And with Henry, the future looks bright.

Henry only had two receptions for 36 yards on Sunday, but he found the end zone for his first NFL touchdown.

Henry isn’t just a red-zone option. He’s shown the skills necessary to be an all-around tight end, as Bolts from the Blue opined on Sunday:

Henry is an especially intriguing pickup in dynasty leagues as Gates’ time in San Diego begins to come to a close.
