Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman, Hunter Henry Post-Week 4 Fantasy Advice

Fantasy Football
October 2, 2016

The San Diego Chargers have a high-powered offense, but it’s been difficult to trust for fantasy football.

While quarterback Philip Rivers is averaging 277.5 passing yards per game, topping 300 yards in the last two weeks, Sunday’s 35-34 win against the New Orleans Saints showed you never know where the ball is going.

Here’s a look at the notable receiving targets from Week 4.

Travis Benjamin

When Keenan Allen went down in Week 1, Travis Benjamin became the immediate beneficiary when it comes to targets. He finished with seven catches in the first game, broke out with 115 receiving yards and two touchdowns in Week 2, and had a team-high 82 yards in Week 3.

With a favorable matchup against the Saints defense in Week 4, most were expecting a huge performance from the veteran.

That didn’t happen as Benjamin made four catches on a quiet day. He also had a devastating fumble that allowed the Saints to score the go-ahead touchdown.

Perhaps most concerning is the way Rivers spread the ball around, with five different players earning seven or more targets. Benjamin is no longer the lone trustworthy option in the offense.

Benjamin is still start-worthy, especially with a matchup against the Oakland Raiders coming up, but it’s important to temper expectations going forward and adjust against tough defenses.

Dontrelle Inman

After becoming an afterthought, Dontrelle Inman broke out Sunday with the best game of his career.

The receiver’s best play came on a wide-open deep pass in the first half

The NFL shared the replay:

Rivers continued to trust him throughout the day, finding Inman seven times on 11 targets, both of which were team highs. Though he was used sparingly entering the day, ignoring Sunday’s performance as a fluke would be a mistake.

Tyrell Williams had been a go-to target for San Diego in 2016. However, both Williams and Inman were on the roster when Allen got hurt in 2015. Inman finished with 35 catches for 486 yards, while Williams had 90 total yards.

The offense always seems to have a bigger receiver as a deep threat, and both players could potentially fill that role. The 6’4″ Williams is not going to disappear—he finished Sunday with five catches for 40 yards on eight targets—but the 6’3″ Inman showed he can also fill an important role.

At the least, he should be added in deeper leagues with a wait-and-see approach.

Hunter Henry

Even with just four catches on the day, Hunter Henry is an intriguing player to watch going forward. The rookie finished with five catches for 72 yards in Week 3, and San Diego likes using its tight ends.

Will Brinson of CBS Sports discussed the circumstances:

Antonio Gates is still the starter when healthy, but he didn’t practice this week, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. It remains to be seen how long the 36-year-old veteran will be out.

That makes Henry a worthwhile fantasy target at a position that doesn’t feature a lot of depth. If you have an opening at the position, feel free to plug in the rookie for as long as Gates remains on the sidelines.
