Titans will not take on any dead money by releasing him

The Tennessee Titans have told running back DeMarco Murray that he will be released, the team announced Thursday.

Murray, 30, has been the Titans’ lead back the past two seasons, including in 2016, when he was the AFC’s leading rusher with 1,287 yards. Murray’s contract was set to pay him $6.5 million in 2018 and $6.75 million in 2019, but the Titans will not take on any dead money by releasing him. (ESPN)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Another reminder why total and yearly average dollars during the life of a contract mean very little in today’s NFL. It’s all about the guaranteed $. This move was expected this off-season as Derrick Henry proved to be the more efficient runner in Tennessee last season. While Murray had better receiving chops, Henry will likely get the opportunity to be a three-down back in 2018, making him a popular, early-round RB pick in fantasy drafts.
