Rookie-year contract expiring

As for Sammy Watkins, the Rams were aware that his rookie contract was expiring at the end of the 2017 season. A franchise or transition tag to retain Watkins is an option if a long-term deal can’t be reached.

“We’ve chatted with his agent and told him we were coming back in early February and really discuss the intricacies of our plan,” GM Les Snead said. “I know this ?” going from 32nd to first in offense Sammy was a big part of it down the stretch. A goal of ours is to keep that (wide receiver) group together because a lot of our weapons are 25 and under.” (Sporting News – Alex Marvez)

Nerdy Football Analysis: While Watkins was a bust in fantasy by all accounts after producing a 39-593-8 line in 2017, he became a bigger factor in the offense late in the season (four touchdowns over his last five games) and stayed healthy all season – he sat out as a precaution in Week 17 – for the first time since his rookie year in 2014. Although Robert Woods has seemingly taken over the lead role, Watkins could be poised to bounce back with a full offseason in LA. He has WR3 upside in 2018.
