Linehan on Tavon Austin: “He’s a receiver first”

Cowboys “receiver” will also be used in backfield

“We’ll use him for a lot of things, but he’s a receiver first,” Linehan said. “He’s really, in a lot of ways, some of his skill set is as an outside receiver, which is really unique, but he can move around the slot. He can certainly have carries as well as catches from those positions. He can move in the backfield at times – he’s done that his whole career – and if we get a matchup he can run a route that is typically run by a running back. (Sportsday)

Nerdy Football Analysis: There’s been recent discussion that Tavon Austin would be seeing the majority of his snaps at running back, but offensive coordinator Scott Linehan suggests that Austin will work primarily as a receiver. The Cowboys are looking for bodies to fill the hole in the offense left by Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. While Austin will help in that regard, its difficult to envision him being any kind of consistent fantasy performer.
