Injury Dealing with thumb sprain; Trey Lance preparing to start

Day 4 of ThumbWatch saw Jimmy Garoppolo miss another practice, casting further doubt on if he’ll start in the 49ers’ home finale Sunday against the Houston Texans.

Garoppolo is conditioning on his own, however, and by forgoing surgery, there remains a chance he plays, albeit with his thumb in a brace or heavily taped, as was the case Thursday. Running the show in practice all week has been rookie Trey Lance. (Bay Area News Group – Cam Inman)

Nerdy Football Analysis: The moment most fantasy managers expected to happen about two months ago appears to be on the verge of happening now. Lance has reportedly improved by leaps and bounds since his Week 5 start for an injured Garoppolo. There may be no better opponent for Lance to face in his second start than the Texans, and it would be ridiculous for the 49ers to play Garoppolo when it seems obvious he could struggle with his accuracy or make the injury even worse. If Lance gets the nod, he should be considered a low-end QB1 option.
