Tom Coughlin to join team as executive vice president

Doug Marrone, who finished the 2016 season as the Jaguars interim head coach, has accepted the team’s full-time head coaching job, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Monday. The deal is expected to be finalized soon, Rapoport added. The team also is hiring Tom Coughlin, their first head coach, as the team’s executive vice president. They also extended general manager Dave Caldwell’s contract. All three contracts will run through 2019. (NFL.com)

Nerdy Football Analysis: Marrone is the only coach to guide the Bills to a winning record since 2004, so maybe he deserves a shot here. It just feels like an uninspired choice for a team that theoretically has enough talent to make a move in the AFC South. There seems to be little question his backing of Blake Bortles was probably a key reason as to why he got the job. Whether or not Marrone can help improve Bortles’ mechanics is another story.
